What this study found

Overall, dietary antioxidative supplements appeared potentially beneficial for glycemic control and some diabetes complications, but the evidence was heterogeneous and inconsistent across meta-analyses. Chromium was associated with significant reductions in FBS, HbA1c, and TGs, and zinc with reductions in FBS, FI, HbA1c, HOMA index, TC, LDL-C, and hs-CRP. Alpha-lipoic acid improved diabetic neuropathy symptoms after 14, 21, or 28 days at 300 mg/day or 600 mg/day, and vitamin D was linked to improvements in FBS, HbA1c, HOMA index, and inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers.
