What this study found
Cinnamon supplementation was associated with improved glycemic, lipid, blood pressure, and kidney function outcomes versus placebo. Fasting plasma glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides, the TG/HDL-C ratio, and blood pressure decreased, while HDL-C and estimated glomerular filtration rate increased; end-of-study differences were reported as p < 0.005. No adverse effects were observed in the cinnamon group. Overall, the findings suggest cinnamon may help prevent or control diabetic complications in type 2 diabetes.
- Study & population
- 60-day placebo-controlled study in ambulatory adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus who were outpatients at Ladyao Hospital Diabetes Care Clinic in Nakonsawan Province, Thailand.
- Intervention
- Cinnamon capsules providing 1.5 g/day in total (three 500 mg capsules), taken orally three times daily after meals for 60 days, compared with placebo.
- Key limitation
- The active-arm sample was modest and the intervention lasted only 60 days, limiting confidence in long-term effects.
