Garlic supplementation improved oxidative stress markers and quality of life versus placebo over 8 weeks. Total antioxidant capacity increased from 308 ± 16.63 to 334.60 ± 13.72, with between-group P1 = 0.032 and ANCOVA P = 0.02, while malondialdehyde decreased from 3.55 ± 1.99 to 2.73 ± 1.27, with between-group P1 = 0.017 and ANCOVA P < 0.001. Health Assessment Questionnaire scores improved and were better than placebo at the end of treatment (between-groups P = 0.026; ANCOVA P < 0.001), and pain after activity was lower in the garlic group than placebo (P < 0.001). Original abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is a prevalent immune‐inflammatory disease, which is associated with disabling pain. Oxidative stress might play a role in RA pathogenesis and outcomes. According to the antioxidant properties of garlic, the current study was performed to evaluate the garlic supplement effects on some serum levels of oxidative stress biomarkers, and quality of life in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
