What this study found

Probiotic supplementation produced beneficial changes in glycemic control, HDL-cholesterol, and markers of inflammation and oxidative stress over 12 weeks. Compared with placebo, the probiotic group had lower fasting plasma glucose (β -20.02, P = 0.005), insulin (β -2.09, P = 0.01), HOMA-IR (β -0.50, P = 0.03), and higher QUICKI (β 0.008, P = 0.02). It also increased HDL-cholesterol (β 2.52, P = 0.04), improved the total-/HDL-cholesterol ratio (β -0.27, P = 0.02), lowered hs-CRP (β -0.88, P = 0.001), and increased TAC (β 108.44, P = 0.001) and GSH (β 45.15, P = 0.02). Study & population
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and coronary heart disease recruited from a cardiology clinic in Kashan, Iran.
Intervention
The active regimen was oral probiotic capsules taken daily for 12 weeks.
Key limitation
The active arm was small (n = 30) and the intervention lasted only 12 weeks, limiting longer-term inference.
