Methods
The review included randomized controlled trials and cluster-randomized trials involving children aged 3 to 18 years who were overweight or obese. A total of six studies with 674 participants were analyzed.
Intervention
Lifestyle interventions aimed at improving school achievement in overweight or obese children and adolescents were evaluated. These interventions included components of diet, physical activity, sedentary behavior modification, and behavioral therapy.
Results
Lifestyle interventions showed small but significant improvements in overall school achievement and mathematics achievement, as well as cognitive outcomes like executive function and working memory. However, no significant effects were found for reading or language achievements. Methodological issues in existing studies limited the interpretability of results.
Limitations
Many studies had methodological limitations, including high attrition rates and lack of long-term follow-up. The small sample sizes affected the generalizability of results.
