What this study found
Vitamin D3 did not improve the primary eczema outcome, and it did not reduce atopic dermatitis through 2 years. At 3 months, SCORAD was 4.75 ± 7.49 in the vitamin D3 group versus 3.95 ± 5.36 in the placebo group, with no significant difference. By age 2 years, food allergy was higher with vitamin D3: 10/39 (25.6) versus 3/40 (7.5), RR 3.42, 95%CI 1.02-11.77, P = 0.030. At least one allergic condition was also more common: 17/39 (43.6) versus 7/40 (17.5), RR 2.49, 95%CI 1.16-5.34, P = 0.012. No serious adverse events were reported.

To elucidate whether maternal vitamin D supplementation during lactation improves infantile eczema and other subsequent allergic disorders, a randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled trial was performed.
