What this study found
High-phenolic olive oil did not outperform low-phenolic olive oil. Both oils were associated with within-group decreases in the urinary CAD proteomic score of 0.3 and 0.2 units, respectively, at endpoint (P < 0.01), but there was no difference between groups for CAD improvement. There were no significant effects on CKD or diabetes biomarkers, and plasma lipid measures also did not differ significantly between groups. No harms or unintended effects were recorded.
- Study & population
- Randomized, parallel-group, controlled, double-blind study in healthy adults aged 18 to 75 years who were non-regular olive oil consumers and had no diagnosed illness.
- Intervention
- Participants received 20 mL/day of olive oil by mouth for 6 weeks.
- Key limitation
- The trial was short (6 weeks) and small, with only 34 and 29 completers in the active arms.
