Study answer

What this study found

Vitamin A did not significantly reduce maternal mortality vs placebo (407 vs 630 per 100,000 live births; P=0.11). Beta-carotene reduced maternal mortality vs placebo (346 vs 630 per 100,000 live births; P=0.04). Combined Vitamin A or beta-carotene: 378 per 100,000. Interpretation: Beta-carotene shows a potential protective effect in this setting, but overall evidence is not definitive and further research is warranted.
